Fractions – Multiplying and Dividing
Multiplying fractions means multiplying straight across; dividing uses Keep, Change, Flip.
This is a free explanation of Fractions – Multiplying and Dividing — a preview, not the full interactive lesson. The lesson, practice, quizzes, and AI Tutor are inside the app.
Multiplying fractions is the simplest operation — multiply across the tops, multiply across the bottoms, then simplify. Cross-cancellation can shorten the work: before you multiply, check whether any numerator shares a factor with any denominator.
Dividing fractions uses Keep, Change, Flip: keep the first fraction as-is, change the ÷ to ×, and flip the second fraction (swap its top and bottom). Then multiply across and simplify.
Always convert mixed numbers to improper fractions before multiplying or dividing — trying to multiply mixed numbers directly almost always gives a wrong answer. And when dividing, only the second fraction gets flipped.
Worked example
Divide: 3/4 ÷ 2/3
- Use Keep-Change-Flip: keep 3/4, change ÷ to ×, flip 2/3 → 3/2.
- Multiply: 3/4 × 3/2. Numerators 3 × 3 = 9; denominators 4 × 2 = 8. That is 9/8.
- Convert to a mixed number: 9 ÷ 8 = 1 remainder 1 → 1 1/8.
- Check: 1 1/8 × 2/3 = 9/8 × 2/3 = 18/24 = 3/4.
1 1/8
