- Absolute Value The absolute value of a number, written |n|, is its distance from zero — always positive. So |−4| = 4 and |4| = 4.
- Comparing and Ordering Numbers To compare numbers, picture them on the number line: the one farther to the right is greater. Watch negatives — −2 is greater than −7, even though 7 looks bigger.
- Integers – Adding Adding a negative moves you left on the number line, the same as subtracting the positive: 3 + (−5) = 3 − 5 = −2.
- Integers – Multiplying and Dividing Two sign rules that never change: same signs give a positive result, different signs give a negative. So (−3) × (−4) = +12, and (−2) × 3 = −6.
- Integers – Subtracting Subtracting a negative is the same as adding — “minus a minus equals a plus” — so 2 − (−4) = 2 + 4 = 6.
- Negative Numbers Negative numbers are the values less than zero, the opposite of positives: if +3 means 3 steps right of zero, then −3 means 3 steps left.
- Number Line The number line puts every number in order — negatives to the left of zero, positives to the right — so you can see where a value sits and compare numbers at a glance.
