This lesson covers
- Distance Between Two Points The distance between two points is the straight-line length between them, found with d = √[(x₂ − x₁)² + (y₂ − y₁)²] — the Pythagorean theorem applied on the grid.
- Equation of a Circle
- Midpoint Formula The midpoint of two points is the spot exactly halfway between them: average the x’s and average the y’s — ((x₁ + x₂)/2, (y₁ + y₂)/2).
- Plotting Points To plot a point (x, y), start at the origin, move left or right by the x-value, then up or down by the y-value, and mark the spot.
- Points on a Line The points on a line are all the (x, y) pairs that make its equation true; plug a point in, and if both sides match, it lies on the line.
- Quadrants (Coordinate Plane) The two axes split the grid into four quadrants: I (+, +) upper right, II (−, +) upper left, III (−, −) lower left, IV (+, −) lower right — a quick way to check a point’s signs.
- Reading Coordinates Every point on the grid has an address (x, y): the first number is how far left or right along the x-axis, the second how far up or down along the y-axis, starting from the origin (0, 0).
