A rectangular prism is a box shape with length, width, and height. Volume measures the space inside — how much it holds — and is measured in cubic units. The formula is V = l × w × h. A helpful way to picture it: volume counts how many unit cubes fill the box.

To find the volume, multiply all three dimensions together in any order. If a problem gives the volume and two dimensions, rearrange the formula to solve for the missing one — divide the volume by the product of the two known sides.

Keep volume (cubic units) separate from surface area, which measures the outside covering (square units). Volume answers “how much does it hold?”; surface area answers “how much material covers the outside?”

Worked example

A box has a volume of 120, a length of 6, and a width of 4. Find the height.

  1. Write the volume formula and substitute what you know: 120 = 6 × 4 × h.
  2. Simplify the right side: 6 × 4 = 24, so 120 = 24 × h.
  3. Solve for h: h = 120 ÷ 24 = 5.
  4. Check: 6 × 4 × 5 = 120.

h = 5 units
