Ratios & Proportions
Ratios, unit rates, solving proportions, and scale drawings.
This page is a free outline of what the Ratios & Proportions lesson covers — it is not the lesson itself. The interactive lesson, practice, quizzes, and AI Tutor are inside the app.
This lesson covers
- Ratios A ratio compares two quantities — like 12 boys to 15 girls — and can be written 3 to 4, 3:4, or 3/4. Order matters, and ratios reduce to lowest terms just like fractions.
- Scale Drawing and Models A scale drawing or model uses a fixed ratio between drawing and reality, like 1 inch = 50 miles on a map. Set up a proportion with that scale to find a real distance or size.
- Solving Proportions A proportion sets two ratios equal (2/3 = x/9). When one value is missing, cross-multiply — multiply diagonally across the equals sign — then divide to find it.
- Unit Rates A unit rate is the amount for just one unit: 5 items for $12.50 is $2.50 per item. Divide the total by the quantity — it’s the easy way to compare two deals.
