This lesson covers
- Connecting Tables, Equations, and Graphs The same relationship can be shown three ways — a table of x-y values, an equation, and a graph — and each one can be built from the others.
- Coordinate Plane The coordinate plane is the grid where graphs live — a horizontal x-axis and a vertical y-axis crossing at the origin (0, 0), locating every point by its (x, y) address.
- Graphing Linear Equations Graphing a linear equation means drawing its straight line — plot the y-intercept, then use the slope (rise over run) to step to more points, or plot any two points and connect them.
- Graphing Parabolas The graph of a quadratic is a U-shaped parabola. It opens up when a > 0 (a minimum) or down when a < 0 (a maximum), with its turning point called the vertex.
- Points on a Line The points on a line are all the (x, y) pairs that make its equation true; plug a point in, and if both sides match, it lies on the line.
- Slope (Rise Over Run)
- Slope-Intercept Form (y = mx + b)
- Solving Systems by Graphing Graphing solves a system by drawing both lines: the point where they cross is the (x, y) solution that satisfies both equations.
- X-Intercept The x-intercept is where a line crosses the x-axis — where y = 0. Find it by setting y = 0 and solving for x.
- Y-Intercept The y-intercept is where a line crosses the y-axis — the point (0, b). Find it by setting x = 0; in y = mx + b it’s the constant b.
